Small business HHS R&D funding

Research Grants

Many government agencies offer funding for pure scientific research in areas of strategic importance to the nation. The Research Project Grant (R01) is the original and historically oldest grant mechanism used by NIH. The R01 provides support for health-related research and development based on NIH’s mission.

R01s can be investigator-initiated, or in response to a program announcement/request for application. Either way, the applicant-proposed R01 research plan must be related to the stated program interests of one or more of the NIH institutes and centers based on their program descriptions. The NIH awards R01 grants to organizations of all types (such as universities, colleges, small businesses, for-profit, foreign and domestic and faith-based).

The Grants.gov model requires that all applications, including those that are investigator initiated, be submitted in response to a specific Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA).  The FOAs are posted on Grants.gov and in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. If you need help, Green Tape can find the FOA you qualify for, so you can apply.

The U01, a Research Project Cooperative Agreement, is another NIH mechanism to support discrete, specified, circumscribed projects that are performed by investigator(s) in an area representing their specific interests and competencies. The U01 is used when substantial programmatic involvement is anticipated between the awarding institute and center.

Many other agencies, notably the National Science Foundation, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, have multiple programs designed to fund fundamental science and research.  Let Green Tape’s expertise guide you to the funding you seek!
